Week 6 -A fresh start

I decided to choose a slightly different approach to our idea, and work by myself with it for the rest of the project.

My idea has evolved from "Technology and the negative influence it has on children" to being more of the fact that parents are the ones who give children the technology or the reason to use it to begin with. So I decide that instead of targeting children to stop using technology so much, I want to focus on the parents. Parents are usually busy with work and other events, and so they don't have much time to spend with their children, hence turning to technology to use as a babysitter.

I was staying with my partner over the break, who lives with his friend and partner. This woman has a 7 year old daughter. She came home from work to see me outside teaching her daughter how to ride her bike without training wheels. Now to me this felt like a pretty big deal, like learning how to walk for the first time. I went inside to get a drink to see the mother on the couch with facebook on her phone. This gave me a burning feeling inside and I wish I said something. Why was I out there spending time with her kid when she's inside scrolling through her news feed??

Later that same day, my partner and I were sitting inside talking and could here crying coming from outside the window. We waited a bit, but the crying continued. So I ran out of the room to see the mother still on the couch with her phone, I went outside to the poor little girl stuck between a deck chair that had closed on her. She was in quite a bit of pain and stressed as she was stuck. Again, why was I the one to run to her care??

I went back inside to the mother laughing at something she read on facebook and wanted me to have a look. I wish I said something to her again, but I just walked away.

This is the issue I want to look into. The sad thing is that she's won't be the only mother who is like that. I want to try to come up with something that interests parents and allows them time to spend with their children. Because witnessing that was heartbreaking.
